I Want It All…And I Want It NOW! Not to mention CHEAP.

This is a big misconception by many clients in this industry that look to book quality DJ entertainment for their event. They know they need a DJ with a solid reputation and recognition, which is good. That means that high quality, talented DJ's are in high demand, which means work for good DJ's. But work shouldn’t leave a DJ with a bad taste in their mouth. Clients are under considerable stress to pull off a successful event. Deadlines, budgets, etc. all cause a client headaches.

This point is well taken. It also should be known that a license to be demanding can prohibit the DJ for doing a successful event and performing at a high level. If a client dictates a timeline that is unmanageable, the professional entertainer should be allowed to educate them in the nuances of the requirements for a successful event. If an unreasonable figure for financial compensation is offered, again the client must be willing to learn why cost is presented at a figure that is labeled as "value" for said services. DJOC has highly skilled and talented professional entertainers that have a reputation that is built upon hundreds if not thousands of successful events. This reputation needs to be acknowledged as well as trusted and the compensation should be reflected as such. The value for a DJ with their talent, professionalism and experience is going to usually be a premium as most DJ's who are in high demand are sticklers for details and know that they are only as good as their next, not last, performance.

That is why you sought such talent and that is why you want to hire such talent because they are putting their DNA on your event.

The DJ’s DNA and fingerprint on the event is what is going to make the event special and unique. The same way said DJ’s fingerprint are on the vinyl or CDJ's, along with the mixer faders, are making the music special.

If you’re not willing to pay for the talent, there are usually alternatives within DJOC and other top notch entertainment and management agencies. You will still receive incredible music consultation to insure success. Or you can go another route and you can be sure to expect that the performance will be less than stellar if you do not select an agency or performer who has a history of excellence and a commitment to providing you with their absolute very best.

Another misfortune is that many clients are simply unaware of the considerations in which said talent/performer/entertainment are already well versed.

Common examples:

· Equipment Issues

· Venue Issues

· Personnel Issues

A client may be unaware of, overlook, or simply forget, that the entertainment is often supplying the sound equipment (or other equipment for that matter such as lighting or multimedia presentation gear) for an ENTIRE event, i.e., the ceremony, reception, and possible wireless set up for the balcony after party, not just during their specific performance time. If the entertainment is supplying this equipment, they can expect to be paid for in doing so. If not, the entertainment would pack up upon completion of their performance and leave.

Also, some venues, like the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington DC, are GSA Buildings that have specific loading and unloading requirements. These considerations require additional planning and manpower so that procedures are properly followed, hence…additional fees.

Finally, there are the personnel issues. A premium talent will need the proper support staff such as an operation liaison and equipment handlers present during the entire event. This is what is required for the event to operate properly.

The bottom line is that there are many items of considerations that are unique to a particular events. This is why the client wants to hire these performers. Never compromise on quality as this is the foundation for insuring a spectacular event. These things come at a level of compensation a client, who wants the best and demands the best, should be more than ready to contract.

Remember, you want a great event, therefore, hire a great entertainer.

DJ Profiles & Talent: DJ Ramzy

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of DJ DC Profiles. This week we have one of the hottest and most talented DJ’s in the Washington DC area. DJ Ramzy. Incredibly talented, versatile and most importantly, he keeps the dance floor packed. He is a pure entertainer.

DJDC:

Over the past few years you have really developed a following in the Washington DC area. As you have created the “Ramzy Brand”, what was your focus, i.e., how did you want people to envision you?

DJR:

I wanted people to envision me as a generally nice guy, down to earth person who likes to have fun behind the decks. I have been told that people like my personality and it shows when I work. I love to take requests, get feedback from the crowd and answer questions that people have. I feel that early on, DJs get a bad rep from the general public because they are seen as “douchebags” or “assholes.” I like to be the nice guy; I like to show people that not all DJs are what you perceive them to be.

DJDC:

When working with promoters, what is your approach to ensure that you get what you want out of your performance and they get what they want?

DJR:

Well, performance-wise, what you get out of your performance is up to you. I don’t think it has much to do with the promoters. All in all, I think every DJ wants the promoters to pack the house with a great crowd but even if your show has 30 people, you can still have fun and have a great show. There is no way to ensure a show goes perfectly for promoters and DJs, if you’ve been in this industry long enough, you know that not every night can hit capacity but you try your best to make it happen. I guess every DJ wants the promoter to let them do what they want and work the crowd how they know how to and the promoter normally just wants you to promote a little for them to try to get your following to come out to see you.

DJDC:

What is your inspiration when you are playing at a place like Josephine’s on a Friday night? Meaning you know they are going to want it funky and hip as opposed to doing a networking or happy hour at the Roof Top in Rockville?

DJR:

Well that’s what I love about being a diverse DJ. I can make a happy hour fun and funky just like I can bump any venue in DC. Happy hours are great, you can build the atmosphere, start out with some classics, go into 80s, 90s, Motown, and as the drinks kick in, you can almost play it like a club in DC. I LOVE being able to drop songs like “Sweet Child Of Mine” into “I Wear My Sunglasses At Night” and not having everyone look at you like you’re crazy. I often forget that people don’t know classics as much as you want them to so playing for an older crowd that can appreciate the classics is really fun. Also, normally, people don’t expect a DJ to be mixing it up so much at a happy hour or networking event so the element of surprise is really fun for me. I often have people just come stare at what I do because they don’t believe the music they are hearing is coming from me.

DJDC:

You are a very versatile DJ, you are able to mix it up at all sorts of events. Bars, Lounges, Private, Weddings, etc. Do you have perspective clients that see you in one setting and immediately feel that is what you will bring to another? How do you deal?

DJR:

I’ll be honest, I have had some clients that when I do their weddings, they are a bit hesitant because they think I only do clubs but they forget I’ve been doing mobile events (weddings, mitzvahs, private parties, corporate parties) for 8 years now. I normally deal with it by giving them references, my former clients are more than happy to refer me to anyone. I’ve helped plan weddings, I’ve also walked into weddings with absolutely no info on the event and I am forced to wing it, ultimately doing a great job. Each part of the spectrum works for me, I’m comfortable in any environment.

DJDC:

What are your thoughts on the club scene in DC as opposed to Baltimore? What is the vibe and which one seems to have more choices?

DJR:

Well, I’ve honestly never been clubbing in Baltimore. I’m a DC guy (go skins, caps & nats!) so I can’t really say. I can’t imagine Baltimore has more choices than DC though. DC is PACKED with lounges/bars/clubs that each have their own feel. I love this city.

DJDC:

What is your approach to doing a wedding?

DJR:

Normally, I’ll sit down with the bride and groom and sometimes the wedding planner about a month or so before the wedding and plan out what’s going to happen at what time and what song needs to be playing and when. I’ll make sure I have the pronunciation of all the bridal party’s names correct and sometimes spell them out phonetically. I’ll often suggest something fun or different to do during the walk-in to the reception, the brides and grooms love this by the way. When the big day hits, I just do what I’ve been doing for years, play great music, get the crowd laughing during certain events and get the crowd dancing when the dance floor is open. In all my years, I’ve never had a single complaint at a wedding… I take pride in that.

DJDC:

There are many DJ’s who are specialists. Some are turntablists, some are drum and bass freaks, some are techno heads. Do you feel that just specializing in one genre or approach limits you as a DJ or do feel that helps you focus more on bringing light to that specific area of the industry?

DJR:

Well, yes and no. It limits you but it makes you really good at that specific genre. For example, when I play house, you can tell I’m not a house DJ. I do everything house DJs don’t, I mix too fast, I scratch. When a house DJ plays house, they really know what they’re doing because that’s all they know but I do feel that it limits them. You’re not gonna ask a house DJ to spin at your wedding or at your hip-hop club, are you? Of course not. What I like about being so open format and versatile is that I can play a bunch of different venues. For example, Barcode, I do international Thursday nights. I play a bunch of international music from around the globe. Friday night, I DJed the main floor of Ozio which is almost straight hip-hop and finally, Saturday night, I DJed Ultrabar, Chroma. It’s mash-up, top 40, house, hip-hop and international music all night. It’s fun to go through all the genres in a week, keeps you on your toes.

DJDC:

What are your favorite spots in DC to perform and why?

· Ultrabar (911 F St.) – Straight club atmosphere, rated #1 in DC for dance floor action. Nothing is going on there but drinking and dancing, you know what to expect and the crowd is always fun. www.ultrabardc.com

· Lima (14^th & K) – INSANE sound system with a killer dancefloor and great light system. I’ve only DJed at Lima a couple times but I loved it. www.limaloungedc.com

DJDC:

Have you had an opportunity to do any festivals, large outdoor events and if so, where and what was the energy like?

DJR:

Only one event, it was the Rock the House Festival at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, MD. I DJed for Pitbull, Ludacris, EPMD, Methodman, Redman, the WuTang Clan, Baby Bash and more. It was really cool to be behind the scene and hop up on stage to DJ when needed. My favorite part of the event was when I did a live remix on stage and the emcee (Wood from the WuTang Clan) and the crowd were like “WHOA!” The reaction was awesome. When I did go into the crowd, people were noticing me and saying how I did a good job, it was fun. I did learn what to play and what not to play before a big artist comes on stage, so it was a learning experience as well.

DJDC:

Who are some of the DJ’s and artists that have influenced you, your style and your desires to entertain?

DJR:

Well, I’ll be honest and chronological here. When I started, my uncle who trained me to DJ was a big influence, he taught me the basics of DJing, music selection, how to mix, when to mix, how to keep a beat. Once I got that down, I listened a lot to Power 96 (Miami radio station) because their DJs really mixed their asses off every day haha. As I grew older and was out on the road late at night, I would listen to Chris Styles on Hot 99.5 on my way home from mobile events and listened to him, getting a feel for DC nightlife. As I grew and really appreciated DJing for what it was, DJ Enferno was (and still is) my idol. He took DJing to an entirely new level and opened my eyes (and ears) to a new world. Locally, DJ Saam (nohomo) is my favorite; he gives his shows 110% every time and really has dedication and appreciation for his craft. I look up to him not only as a DJ but as a person and I honestly study the crap out of him at every show. Just when you think you’ve seen him at his best, he blows you away at the next show.

DJDC:

What is your definition of a true DJ and why?

DJR:

This is a tough and simple question to answer at the same time. Personally (and I hope no one takes offense) I think a true DJ is one that can look at a crowd and know what to play and how to mix the tracks to keep the people going crazy all night. Anybody can put on an iTunes playlist or take requests or put together a set at home and just press play, but a DJ will mix tracks live, read the crowd and interact with the crowd and share their excitement with the crowd through their music and style.

DJ Profiles & Talent: DJ D-Lux

Welcome everyone to our first edition of “DJ Washington DC Talents & Profiles”. For our inaugural issue we have selected Don “D-Lux” Ashford. DJ D-Lux is originally from Philadelphia and you can instantly tell from his approach to turntablism and his understanding of various genres and sub-genres of music. He is able to entertain you for either several minutes with a display of turntable technics that are on the level of DJ Q-Bert as well as being able to keep a wedding, club, lounge or private event’s dance floor filled for hours. I was lucky enough that he was able to take the time and sit down with us and provide us with some insight on who he is, why he loves what he does and what you should expect out of him for any of his performances.

DJ Washington DC (DJDC):

People come to DJ Washington DC for education on our industry and to obtain a professional perspective from talented and experienced DJ’s. That being said, how long have you been a DJ and what aspect of your talent defines who you are as an entertainer?

D-Lux (DL):

I’ve been DJ'ing since 1988. I believe in giving a show, which I believe most DJ's in this profession today do not believe in that. I never sit down, stop my mix, or pause (unless the client wants me to). My music flows in transition. I take this seriously. Most of my clients/audience can feel my energy when they hear me. I know my music. I know all genres of music. I remember once upon a time you had to earn the title “DJ”. Now cats today download music and call themselves a “DJ”. I hear some of these DJ’s today play and it just irks me to hear them spin today. No respect for the ones who influenced the art form from the past and present.

DJDC:

You are an incredible turntabelist. When I hear you perform it seems as if those Philadelphia influences of Cash Money, Miz and of course my man Jazzy Jeff, seem to show in your approach, when entertaining at a club or lounge how do you incorporate that into a set:

DL:

Being from Philly, I came up listening to these guys. They are major influences in my style. When Jazzy Jeff did “Live At Union Square”, I studied that set over and over until I was able to get my transformer cuts to sound like his. When I heard Cash scratch on “Ugly People Please Be Quite”, I was at aw with his smooth cuts. And when DJ Miz cut up “Peter Piper [by Run DMC] on “We Don’t Play” Every DJ in Philly wanted to learn that scratch! To name a few others, DJ Jay-Ski, Cosmic Kev and Lightning Rich. These DJ’s are still doing their thing. I like to hear my crowd go “Awhhhh” on the dance floor. I love it when I’m scratching or doing something and it makes someone bob their head really hard. I love to flip the old with the new. Old School Parties; I love spinning old Hip-Hop, R&B, Breaks, House and Jazz. These guys are one of the best that ever done that.

DJDC:

When you are contacted by a perspective client and they ask you, “What is your DJ style”. Is that a question that irks you because of your versatility? I ask that question because here at DJ Washington DC we tend to rephrase that question because, based on our experience, presentation of the question in that manner stereotypes DJ’s as either a club, wedding, mitzvah, lounge, house, etc., type of DJ. Would you agree and how do you handle such questions:

DL:

Oh I definitely agree. I believe that the business made it that way. And on the flip side, I think the consumer is trying to figure out what they are getting before they hire the DJ. Craziest gig I have done out of my element was a country western party in the late 90’s. People looked at me while I was setting up and they were questioning whether or not I knew anything about Country Music. Truth is…I didn’t! I got a friend who was heavy into country music to give me a list of songs. I played off that list, took requests, flowed into disco and killed the night. Truth is, if you’re a good DJ, you should be able to overcome any element or environment. The correct way to approach a DJ is to tell them what kind of party you are having and what you want played. Then the DJ could tell you if they’re comfortable playing for your party.

DJDC:

Instead of trying to understand your style, can you help us to understand your approach for performing a wedding for a couple in their early 30’s who (how can I say this and be politically correct) has bank and compare that approach to doing a club or lounge spot in DC that has a tendency to lean towards Top 40 & Hip Hop:

DL:

Well with any wedding I do, I ask detailed questions on what the client wants. Sometimes the client doesn’t know what should go on or needs assistance. I’m experienced with doing weddings. Different things happen at each wedding. It’s a special day for the client, so you should be very specific as possible in what the customer wants. I go into details as to figuring out what songs, dances and other events do they want during their wedding. Club environment, it’s easy because you just play what’s hot. You read your crowd and figure it out. At a wedding, you gotta keep it traditional, but yet provide what the client wants. Then read your crowd once everyone gets loose and then play towards your crowd. A good DJ should know when to switch things up.

DJDC:

I want to go back to the question on preparing for a gig, but I want to add a slight twist. What if you have a couple with different backgrounds who are infatuated with artists such as Bon-Jovi, Beatles, Michael Jackson, Flo-Rida, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Maroon Five & Notorious B.I.G. and during the week you are playing a residence gig where they want nothing but Cameo, Parliament, and 80’s Hip Hop:

DL:

I can do it all! I know my music! When the client gives me a song request list, that give’s me the feel for what kind of music that should be played at the party. There are a lot of DJ’s that can’t be versatile. Why should they call themselves a DJ? Not saying you should know everything, but you should learn how to adapt to your environment musically.

DJDC:

When growing up, what about being a DJ embraced you and when you got your first set of turntables, what was that feeling? I remember when I got my first set of 1200’s, not my first turntables, but my first 1200’s, man that feeling was like, “yes, I am now officially in the DJ game”. Talk about that day and describe in every detail the euphoria of the moment.

DL:

Awh man……..I learned from straight arm turntables…Putting nickels on the head and stuffing tissue under the tone arm. Man 1200’s use to be $800 a pair! I had a friend who I grew up with in North Philly who was a DJ in the early 80’s. I used to walk blocks to use his and practice in his basement. His famous scratch was a basic military scratch. When I got on his tables and did some transformers, he was like “OK little D, I see you” while he was holding a 40 ounce in his hand. When I got my own, dang…..I was soooooo happy because I have wanted them for years! I REFUSE to go away from my 1200’s. They’re just my standard. No offense to the ones who use different. Hey as long as you do your thing, I got no problems with that.

DJDC:

How would you describe the club scene in DC as compared with those of other major markets such as New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Miami? I always tend to tell people that within those particular markets it is about the DJ and that those are DJ markets. DC is a Club market where they push the club more than the entertainment. What are your thoughts:

DL:

It is very different. For one, the people that come to the party are different. In Philly, they walk in and start dancing. In DC, I find that people have to see who’s there first before they get on the floor (just kidding). It’s all about the music. Up north, they don’t particularly care for Go Go Music like DC does. But if you go south of Virginia, they love it. I can go to DC and know what to play. I can go to Philly, New York, New Jersey and know what to play. Like you said, it’s all about the DJ.

DJDC:

Now, I really want you to think on this one because this is important in not only how you perform, but how you also prepare for your clients. What do you want clients to remember most about you and your performance:

DL:

That I am a real, true good DJ. I am a show. I’m a professional that brings it! And they would hire me again. I take criticism seriously. If my friend tells me he didn’t particularly like what I played that night, I would get offended! I think a lot of these today DJ’s are lazy and just want to make a dollar. Hey I don’t knock that. But if you just want to set up your iPods, or you just want to play songs one by one, then call yourself an entertainer….not a DJ. Earn the title! The game needs to get back to that.

DJDC:

I always have to emphasize versatility in being a DJ, because you are an artist. However, all artists have aspirations. That being said, if you had the opportunity to play at any arena, club, lounge or venue in the world, where would it be and most importantly, why:

DL:

I would love to perform more overseas. Overseas they have a strong love for Real DJ’s. The atmosphere is crazy different. I’ve done it one time and I would love to go back. Here in the states, anywhere in Vegas because it’s always a party there J

DJDC:

Here is a final question that I am sure will provoke some additional thought. If you had the chance to correct an event in the past, weather it was good or bad, which event would it be and why would you change it and for what reason:

DL:

I was in high school and this girl wanted to hire me at a rec center around the corner from Gratz High School in Philly. I didn’t go record shopping. I didn’t have the latest anything. And my speaker blew out. She called somebody else to DJ the party. I was so mad; I packed my stuff up not knowing that I had left my 1200’s in there. My dad was rushing me to hurry up. Man I was sooo mad. Wish I could have that night back til this day! I should have waited until I got my things right with my music and equipment.

DJDC:

Washington DC has some of the most talented and unique musicians on the planet. These musicians approach their passion with an attitude that pushes them to perfection and beyond. They understand their goal, their audience and are determined to entertain them. Many times this is done for hours on end and without a single break or a stop in energy. The excitement that is generated from their detailed precision and execution of tracks at 110, 115, 125 and sometimes 130 beats per minute (BPM) or greater makes them the center of attention. Yes, they are the center of attention, even if they are usually just heard and not scene. You have males and females who go beyond just their physical look and imposing presence, but they also know that if they do not do a good job, then you are not going to request to hear them again, and again.

My purpose of this blog is to get you to take notice and understand how they think, why they love what they do and for you to see the actual value in what they do. Hmmph, if it was that easy then Las Vegas would have iPod docks in all their clubs and Steve Jobs would be the number one artists in the world! We are talking about people with an incredible ear for knowing what is good, no, let me scratch that, what is funky, and I mean James Brown, Parliament, Rolling Stones, Dennis Ferrer, Dr. Dre funky, to the masses! They know, from the electricity in the air what is going to make a group of 1,000 drop and do the “Cupid Shuffle” or throw their hands “left, right, left, right” as well as “jump and wave” to “Follow the Leader”. They will get an entire crowd to say yeah in unison at the hottest clubs in Washington DC, Baltimore and Northern Virginia. Why? Because they, and by now you should know I mean Disc Jockeys, are musicians.

I had a bandleader say to me once, at a networking event for non-profits, that being a DJ is easy. I nearly punched him the mouth Mike Tyson style. Although I play the saxophone, never would I dismiss someone and their profession. Who is this guy? Not anyone that we wish to acknowledge here at DJ Washington DC or at Disc Jockeys On Call. In the past DJOC had an ongoing battle in defending our prices. Potential customers usually call with their primary concern being our price. This question is asked without us knowing what type of event, where it is taking place and most importantly, the talent level desired in a DJ.

Over the past several months DJOC has been going through a restructuring. We looked at what clients needed and wanted in order to feel good about selecting a DJ. Speaking with over twenty brides with weddings either taking place during the latter months of 2011 and the earlier months of 2012, many of them have become wary, or should I say skeptical, over what they read on message boards and review sites. "Everyone with ratings have outstanding ratings!". "No one has anything lower than (the top rating)", stated one client. So I asked them to tell me, "What does a good DJ for your wedding look like?"

Everyone had a different criterion for making their selection. The one time, aside from price, that was consistent throughout our survey was the need for the DJ to be professional. Talent was not an immediate requirement. In fact, many who we surveyed stated that meeting with the DJ to "see if his or her style fits what we want" was a necessity. So I then asked, why is that the case and more than half said, "because I read that in a bridal magazine".

Aside from not showing up, what is your biggest fear about the entertainment

To the majority of them, having a talented DJ with an extensive resume, was merely a second thought. Many looked at the reputation of the company via their website and the guidance of a bridal or party site. They were more willing to take the word of an event planner or another vendor with whom they had already secured and had built a level of comfort in their product and knowledge of their event.

They also wanted to make sure that the DJ had performed at the venue previously. Why? Because the magazine's said this is important. Let's be truthful, with today's technology and the ability to pick up the phone and talk to the manager of a venue, about the venue, this should never be a requirement.

But it is and to top it off, they just want to be sure that the DJ knows how to read the crowd. Now, I am going to say this as delicately as I can without sounding harsh:

ALL OF THAT IS 100% BS!

When securing entertainment for your event, they should be professional, talented, ask questions and above all else, have an agenda on getting to know you. The events that are successful and the energy is great is because the entertainment knew the crowd. They discover their likes and dislikes the night of the event. It was done prior. If it is a club, we get to know the crowd, the people who like the scene and what makes them dance prior by sitting, observing and embracing the culture and ambiance of that venue.

Clubs, lounges and bars are marketed towards specific demographics, i.e., advertisement through specific radio stations. With a wedding we have got to build a music profile and get to know the client so that we understand what they mean when they say 80's and 90's and nothing cheesy. There is so much to do prior to the event that insures a successful event that it carries with it an element that most people fail to recognize: VALUE!

As a consumer, you have to take the time to ask yourself questions. Questions that we, the entertainment provider, should be able to answer quickly and clearly. 1) Why is your price as presented and 2) What do you do to get to know me and my musical preferences?

An entertainer's style and approach should never be a question because 1) You know what you like and 2) Once you have explained what you like, they should be talented and versatile enough to be able to do your job and professional enough to say no, I am not the entertainment for you.

IT'S YOUR EVENT, YOU SHOULD GET WHAT YOU WANT!

When looking at references of any entertainer, have a list of questions for the reference that addresses the entertainers personality, ethics and did everyone dance. Be sure to know what the client preferred in terms of music genres and be sure to ask how flexible they were in their working within your means. All of this determines the value of the entertainment along with one other key item, EXPERIENCE!

The bottom line, what a DJ does prior to the event, time spent and process preparing, their talent, resume, the company's infrastructure and code of ethics all pay a part in the value of the DJ. If they are able to convey this to you in a clear and concise manner, then their price will be more than justified

The Florida bride was thrilled, ecstatic that she was booking the very best DJ for a wedding reception that was sure to not only be thrilling for her family, but also for her guests. Yet she’d never before personally observed a performance by JR Silva or any other employee of Silva Entertainment.

Welcome to the 21st century and the world of social networking sites such as WeddingWire, which seek to provide engaged couples with an online tool to easily book the best vendors for receptions based primarily on referrals and reviews from previous customers.

Naturally, this type of site provides business owners with yet another way to market themselves over the Internet for no cost, and therefore a guaranteed return-on-investment.
DJs from around the country have varying opinions on the effectiveness and impact of sites such as WeddingWire, with most claiming to have observed a marked increase in profits, yet with others saying that they’ve found even better options.

What kind of response do these sites garner for promoting a DJ business and guaranteeing higher charges? How do mobiles actually use online reviews to effectively market their businesses? And what specific methods do DJs use to garner even more positive reviews?

“I wouldn’t say that I concentrate on getting the reviews, but it is an added part of our customer cycle,” says the Orlando-based Silva. “We used to just ask for their feedback on the event, while now we ask for their feedback in addition to sending them to the WeddingWire site to leave their response.

“As soon as brides began telling me they were reading the reviews and using them to guide them on who to call, I knew we had to be there.”

Silva says that keeping our attention on the needs and goals of an engaged couple is key to finding success on WeddingWire, since the way to successfully better our business through the site is to get great reviews by delivering even more than the couple expects.

“Being on WW doesn’t guarantee me that I can charge higher fees, but our good reviews filter us in a bride’s mind,” he says. “It gets us a chance to sit in front of them. Then we have to be in customer service and sales mode from there. Having good reviews simply helps drive the bride and her fiancé to my website or to make a phone call.”

As an example of how WeddingWire worked well for Silva, he quickly rattles off an example:
“Several of the guests at our reception commented that this was a great wedding,” said one satisfied bride. “Andres did an excellent job as MC. He had an entertaining personality that was a hit with our families, and he included the right mix of Latin, country and regular party music. Meanwhile, JR himself did a great job of planning the event and was first-class and professional.

I believe that hiring Silva Entertainment was the key ingredient in making our wedding reception an overwhelming success, and for that we thank you.”

Obviously, the above review gives evidence that Silva performed with the style and professionalism that resonates from one bride to another.

Blake “Sticky Boots” Eckelbarger in South Bend, Ind., says he began utilizing WeddingWire’s reviews in 2010, and claims the results have been amazingly positive.

“Almost every bridal prospect I’ve spoken with has heard of the site and many are very familiar with it, having done a great deal of research on vendors before meeting with them,” says Eckelbarger. “I’ve also had many brides comment that they like WeddingWire due to the fact it’s much more organic and doesn’t require them to register to look at vendor information and reviews.

“It has a much more visible focus on entertainers.”

From a marketing standpoint, Eckelbarger says another positive aspect of WeddingWire reviews is that they allow prospective couples to read honest ratings of their service from actual brides who are free to write anything they like in an independent forum.

“They can also see ratings on specific points like ‘quality of service’ and ‘value,’” he says. “In my opinion these types of reviews convey much more to a prospective client than some random scanned thank-you notes posted on a company’s website. Most of our clients also mention their entertainer by name in their review, which allows others to see reviews on each of our DJs—not just me.”

Eckelbarger’s company, The Music Place, links to WeddingWire prominently on their website. Many times on the phone they’ll directly reference WeddingWire and encourage the prospect to check out their reviews, especially when brides are considering one of their DJs over another.

“It’s a powerful tool to say, for example, ‘Jeff does a fantastic job in mixing Top 40 songs with classics, so make sure to check out his reviews on WeddingWire where past clients have raved about him,’” he says. “We also make sure to publicize each new review via social media to let our fans know that we continue to be at the top of our game.”

Another DJ owner who has found WeddingWire to be immensely helpful is Greg Hollman, owner of Ambient DJ Service in East Windsor, N.J., who says his business has experienced a high return on investment as a featured vendor.

“Prospective clients take the time to read testimonials and ratings from our former clients,” Hollman says. “The testimonials provide a good sense of our style and what in particular people liked about us. The WeddingWire team is constantly expanding its distribution, and also offers monthly conference calls to advertisers on relevant industry topics.”

How can you maximize the impact of positive reviews on the WeddingWire? Hollman says he is quick to answer when brides and grooms at the end of their reception offer to provide positive references based on their positive experience with Ambient.

“At that time, I mention that I’ll be following up with them in a few weeks, so about three weeks after their reception—I give them some time to settle back in after their honeymoon, but while the buzz is still hot—I send a thank-you e-mail and a link to our WeddingWire storefront so all that they have to do is click through,” he explains.

“I don’t provide any coaching in what they should rate us or write, so the reviews appear organic and real. And even more than that, I don’t invite all clients to review us on WeddingWire—though, of course, they still may do so on their own accord.

“Brides who are raving about their reception seem so eager to tell their story that they’re about to explode are the ideal candidates.”

Yet another user and advertiser on WeddingWire is Scott Goldoor of East Norriton, Pa.-based Signature DJs, who claims he’s gotten decent feedback as a result of receiving guaranteed placement on the site’s front page for local DJs.

“Even more importantly with regard to the reviews, by keeping ongoing, continuous and current reviews, it shows my customers the testimonials for all of the DJs who work with my company,” Goldoor says. “It’s also helped me become more diligent with my follow-up phone calls and e-mails with my customers.

“Obviously, in a down economic climate you need any leverage you can get. If you’ve also noticed, other sites like The Knot have been following suit.”

Goldoor says he’ll often have a specific DJ available for a customer’s date who will contact the client directly. He then follows up with a review or two—plus a reference or two—from people who have used this specific DJ.

“This way a potential client is speaking and meeting with their DJ, and has a recent testimonial or review, as well as a reference to speak with about their recent performance,” says Goldoor.

“I’ll also be integrating this into a new re-design of my website, by adding pictures, video, etc.

“I just received an inquiry from a father of a bride who said, ‘We see you have a lot of really good reviews, and want to set up a meeting right away.’ I proceeded to schedule a meeting with him, his daughter and future son-in-law for later that week. And they ended up writing me a check for the deposit at the end of our very first meeting.

“Would they have found me or booked me had it not been for the WeddingWire reviews? Quite possibly, but it certainly helped and is an added reinforcement to marketing our services.”
While admitting that reviews are important for booking the most (and best) gigs, Jake Riniker of Platteville, Wisconsin’s Riniker Rhythm says he’s received better reviews from The Knot than through WeddingWire simply because The Knot is “not” so crowded.

“I am listed on WeddingWire but I don’t focus on it as much as The Knot, where I have all of my bride’s reviews,” Riniker says. “There are so many DJ companies using WeddingWire that I feel I’ll get lost in the mix. I also don’t like the way vendors are arranged, when you type in an area code for a search.

“My feeling is that it should be closest to furthest, which it’s not.”
Still, Riniker is adamant that reviews are crucial for this day and age, not only for the rating but also for the content.

“I encourage past brides to review me so others can hear what I do differently, and also so I can hear what brides and grooms like so I can continue what they mentioned,” he says. “Reviews have helped me branch out of my local demographic into other more populated areas.

“Future brides read these reviews and say to themselves, ‘This is what I want in my area!’ without ever seeing or hearing about my company. It’s made bookings faster, because now most of the ladies that contact me only want to know if I’m available.”

Riniker claims that his reviews on The Knot have generated three weddings within three months from larger market areas, such as Iowa City and Cedar Rapids in Iowa.

“The wedding in Iowa City, which is will be held in June of 2011, was a very simple one to book,” he says. “The bride contacted me saying, ‘I read your reviews online and like that you have a DJ/Photo Booth package, but are you available this date?’ The reviews made the sales pitch for me, which is huge.”

Over on the West Coast, an online review site called Yelp seems to be overwhelming WeddingWire usage, with users utilizing Yelp to find local businesses such as dentists, hairstylists, mechanics and even mobile DJs.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Mark Haggerty of Denon & Doyle says DJ services tend to live and die based on Yelp reviews.

“I was speaking to someone just last weekend about this and she knows some people who have been hurt very badly by Yelp,” Haggerty says. “The reviews don’t drop off very fast, and that hurts if they’re bad.

“Still, we actually solicit these Yelps from our clients in our follow-up emails after a gig, and we’re blessed to have so many outstanding reviews and comments. It has actually helped our business and the individual DJs that we employ.”

Haggerty says the benefit of such online reviews is that if D&D has a problem with a particular client, they can make it right before that individual gets too steamed over something—and they usually can fix the problem before the client is driven to post a negative Yelp.

“To ensure better reviews, aside from doing the job that you’ve promised the client, follow through and give a great performance,” advises Haggerty. “I’ve usually had a solid rapport with my clients leading up to the event and I check in with them at times during the event, and then someone from our office will how everything went. I never ask that last one myself—if I was the actual DJ—because I want them to be honest. Some people may feel put on the spot, so one of our office people will send the email to make sure the customer is happy with the end result.

“If there was a problem we can therefore try to make them happy, or straighten out a misunderstanding before they get all fired up to write a bad review. We can usually isolate the problem down to one segment of the party—say the microphone cut out—and then offer them a refund equivalent to the problem.”

Of course, the danger of sites such as WeddingWire, The Knot and Yelp, according to Jerry Bazata of DJ Jaz Music and Entertainment, is that the emphasis is oftentimes placed on getting reviews to be noticed.

“The clear problem,” says the Ogunquit, Maine-based DJ, “is that 90-percent of the reviews that DJs post come from brides only and 95-percent of the reviews state the obvious three positive aspects of the mobile DJ: that the DJ was professional, the music was great and that everybody commented on what a great time they had at their wedding.

“This becomes a vague and narrow observation on which almost every bride bases the decision to choose a DJ service,” he says, “yet we are driven to beg and even bribe a new married couple to comment on our services. Yes, I’m correct in saying ‘bribe,’ as I recently saw on a few DJ websites that if a bride sent them a comment about their service they could win a gift certificate.

“In 2011, I’ve made a decision to seek the endorsement of wedding professionals such as photographers, banquet managers, wedding/event planners and corporate clients as opposed to brides, who basically don’t provide the insight or candid testimony to the value my service provides.

“Would it not make more sense to demonstrate that you can work well with a banquet manager in assisting in the flow of the reception, coordinating the time-line and specific instances where you helped out in a crisis situation? Endorsements or recommendations such as these will help to demonstrate our ability to work under pressure, and understand the importance of communication and teamwork during a party or event.”

Bazata claims that attention to detail and the ability to communicate and follow up accordingly, along with providing insight and fresh ideas, will create a memorable evening—and not just a packed dancefloor.

“When it comes to proms and school events,” he says, “I’m focusing on the advisers and school administration to provide me the endorsements and feedback. Students only want to know that you have the latest music in your library; however, the issue with sexually suggestive dancing and inappropriate version of songs is on the spotlight of administration and teachers.

“Today the mobile DJ is seeking to expand beyond just weddings. Event planners are looking for you to assist with fashion shows, product launches and client/customer appreciation events—looking for you to deliver that ‘wow factor’ to other clients. Therefore, getting the testimonials from the corporate executives will enhance your ability to win high-value engagements and more profitable business.”

Mike Mahoney of M&M Entertainment in Portland, Maine, couldn’t agree more with the need for proper follow-up, as he says the most important job for any DJ entertainer is to do the job to get a proper review.

“When someone is looking for references, I send a few links to testimonials,” he says. “The great thing about the testimonials is that, depending on the event and the things you did for it, your review will be different, so they don’t end up all looking like the same ‘You played great music’ testimonials.

“Beyond that, I’ll send a quick follow-up email before sending the survey, asking if they were fully satisfied or had any thoughts for how I may improve my service for future couples. We’ll take care of any issues there and then I’ll send out the survey link.

“As far as this giving me the ability to raise rates—not yet. But I do believe this combination will allow me to improve my services even more and raise my rates accordingly in the future.”

iDJ Not iPod

No, this is not another attack from a DJ against any and all who use an iPod for their wedding, holiday party or private event. No, this is a discussion on those who tend to micro-manage professional DJ's.

What do I mean by this? Okay, let me give you an example.

Recently I had a corporate event that was booked at the last minute. And when I mean last minute I mean two weeks prior to the date instead of two months to a year. As always, to create a greater chance of success, I wanted to put in place the client's music profile prior to the date. This meant speaking with the client quickly and going through my process of getting to know them. I made my calls and left several messages but none of which were ever returned. This in itself is frustrating, especially since I have very little time to prepare. Now, I have performed at countless corporate events and holiday parties during my professional career so I have multiple music sets and programs to reference once I have a sense of what the client desires and a basic understanding of what the timeline and the crowd may dictate.

This is not a full proof plan, however, with nothing to go on, this was the plan!

I arrived to the venue (which shall remain anonymous) the night of the event two hours prior to the start time because it is always better to be early than to arrive late. I also was looking to get set up quickly, find the event planner and gain some needed insight on the evening's itinerary. I walked in, found the planner in charge and began the set up. Once I was set and after quick introductions and thanking them for securing my services, I asked would it be possible to ask a few questions about the evening. The planner said sure and at this time I proceeded to ask the following:

1 - Do you have an extra copy of the timeline for tonight?

2 - What is the crowd like?

3 - What are they looking for in terms of the cocktail hour?

4 - Is there a presentation of any awards?

5 - Are they looking to dance throughout the evening?

6 - What are some of the artists and/or music titles that they desire?

I received the following answers:

1 - There is no timeline

2 - They are a corporate crowd

3 - Cocktail hour is basically for the entire evening as we have it set up like a lounge

4 - There aren't any awards but a quick thank you by the CEO

5 - They don't dance

6 - They like stuff that is upbeat, and please play some Christmas music to start

Now, with there being no timeline and receiving a statement as generic and vague that they are a corporate crowd, I had just as much to go on as I did before I arrived which was nothing and a boat load of assumptions. Without a timeline and an open area that is going to be a cocktail hour theme for four hours, there is so much that leaves very little to the imagination. Also, remember the planner said................They also don't dance?!?!?

Wow!

Now, I am really stuck on who they are, what they want and how to approach the matter. Therefore, I stated to the planner, "Can I make a suggestion, let's just start off with some Jazzy Christmas tunes as they walk in? I will begin with some artists like Marsalis, Krall, Connick and work my way into some Otis Redding along with some Motown and within an hour or so, I will slowly transition into some top 40 and various other hits? We will see how this goes for the first forty five minutes and they we will huddle up to see where we are?" She liked that idea and so we confirmed that as the game plan.

Once set up I began as planned and people began to trickle into this very large open venue slowly and steadily. That being said, my plan to progress at such a rate is considered to be proper protocol and etiquette by any entertainer without a music profile of the client. Why? Because it is always best to start slow and generic with music that is bright and low than to overwhelm and offend as party goers come through the door. People were dressed both formally and semi-formally so initially this seemed to be the best approach. I did notice that many of those coming in were probably in their 50's and many appeared to be of the executive branch of the company. They were smiling, content and I received several nods of gratitude and a few, "I really like this music".

Now, let's ignore all of this and look at what was happening concurrently. An assistant of the planner comes up to me, no more than eight minutes into my playing, and states to me, "can you make it a little more peppy, come on, get it going!" I was immediately offended because I confirmed a game plan with the planner no more than hour prior and the evening was just beginning so I quickly go into Diva DJ mode. "Excuse me, can I asked you who said this?" The assistant says "the client". Now, the assistant is acting on the behest of the planner who got a statement from the client to make an immediate adjustment. Instead of the planner stating to the client our game plan, panic sets in and I immediately become the escape goat. Never mind the fact that there is no music profile and the client or the planner never returned my calls. That being said, the next thing that comes out of my mouth to the assistant is "please do not micro-manage me, the evening has just begun and the planner and I have a plan. A plan that I am currently following. Let's give it a chance because we are expecting a crowd of 500 and I am estimating there are less than forty who are currently here?". The assistant became offended. Who could blame her? Who am I but a professional, talented DJ with more years of experience than she has years living? She quickly replies, "well, if the client states something else to me, then I am just going to have to come back over".

Now, we are at a point of conflict.

My reply was subtle and direct, "if that is the case, then I am more than happy to refund my time and leave immediately. I am doing my job as asked and demands to make me change ten minutes in to the event contradicts what I discussed with your boss, thus making it impossible to do my job. I am a DJ, not an iPod".

I heard nothing else from the assistant the for the rest of the evening.

Event planners have a very difficult job. I don't envy them what so ever. They have to deal with clients who can make incredible demands and in doing so, the planner has to be calm cool and collective or else they will be considered the "bad guy". As a vendor, I have to make the planner look good at all times. I have found that the best way in doing such is by proper communication and keeping an open mind. I always want to know how an event planner works and what can I do to make their job easier. In this situation, my objective was such, however, the planner was consumed with demands from a client that had little understanding on what was needed to entertain their guests throughout the evening. The only thing they had were assumptions. They assumed that the client would know what they meant by peppy and bright and that I would know that and be able to immediately translate it for the evening.

The client also did not know their co-workers and what they wanted.

I did forget to mention that not only were there people in their 50's, but 20's, 30's, 40's, etc. It was a very diversified crowd and, from judging by the rest of the evening, many of them were only there because they had to be and there are so many groups within a group that I felt like I was back in high school.

When I see this, it only validates my approach on speaking with the client and talking in depth about the expectations of the evening. Top event planners get this, in fact, they all insist on it, because they know that those entertainers who know what they are doing, and who have a impeccable reputation, want to make their clients happy. They also know that standing over us throughout the event, never works and it is a solid recipe for failure. What DJ's do in preparing for an event (asking questions, going over artists and music titles, putting together an itinerary with the planner, etc.) insures success for the evening based on the clients needs and desires.

Dictating to a DJ and telling them to make it peppy and bright or "let's get this party going" is not the answer. When your entertainer asks, "can we meet" or "is it possible to have a conference call", then oblige. You hired them because of their reputation. I can assure you that they will be happy that you did and your event will be an absolute success.

Please remember, we are DJ's, not iPods.

Band Vs DJ - Part One

Many people on the outside looking in would probably say that since I am a DJ, my discussion on this topic is going to be very biased. Never mind the fact that I began playing the saxophone at the age of eight and I have written several music compositions. Never mind the fact that I spent eight years studying music at the Community School of Arts in Charlotte North Carolina. Never mind the fact that I have had the opportunity of opening for such notable musical acts as Michael McDonald, Denise Williams, Alex Bugnon, Darius Rucker and Brownstowne. Never mind the fact that while doing so, I received accolades and appreciation for my talent and professionalism directly from these artists and I was more than happy to reciprocate the acknowledgments.

I have also performed in front of audiences that consisted of Paul Tagliabue, David Rockefeller, Bob Johnson, Herb Wilkens and the list goes on and on and on.

Why am I stating all of this in a manner in which I seem to be begging for musicianship validation? Why am I saying this in a manner in which I seem to want you to gloat over my abilities? Because that is exactly what I am doing! I am patting myself on my own back and stating with a chip on my shoulder that I am not just a DJ, but a musician!

This a very indirect but direct way of setting up this discussion on "Band Vs DJ". The "gist" of my written verbiage begins with the entertainment value of a Band verses the entertainment value of a DJ. This immediately goes back to reason as to why I felt the need to beg for validation as a musician.

This must be done before I get into the meat of my dialogue.

In a nutshell, we are not looked at as true entertainers by all and we, meaning DJ's, are in fact deemed to be all the same!

THAT IS FAR FROM THE CASE!

I was told one time by a band leader that "anyone can do your job"(coming upon such preconceived notions is typical in what I experience day to day)! My first reaction was to go Bill Cosby on him and treat him like a Smothers Brother but I kept my emotional physicality in place.

Til' this day I am regretting my decision to remain calm.

By remaining calm I channeled my anger so that I did not raise my impatience as to refute his statement as I kept the negative energy within. Never good because it prohibits one from being productive. By holding back, I gave him temporary validation of his statement and we both brought down the integrity of my craft. That will never happen again. I should have drilled him on the facts of technics and ability to transition from song to song, genre to genre, key to key, etc., and asked him if he had ever held a piece of vinyl in his hand or talked shop with the likes of David Harrelson of MCA records. I should have asked him had he ever done a fashion show that was attended by more than 1,000 people or if he ever performed at a concert where there were 25,000 people in attendance. I should have drilled him on how he has disrespected not only my field, but the entertainment industry as a whole.

I let him off the hook.

Never again.

Never would I state to anyone, "anyone can do what you do". If that is not being disrespectful then, the definition of the word shouldn't exist.

When you see Flea of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers perform, you know that you have witnessed one of the greatest bassists to ever walk this planet. When you see Diana Krall perform, you have witnessed not only one of the greatest vocalists, but one of the baddest keyboardist ever to make you bop your head to Jazz. When you hear Quincy Jones, well, you get the picture.

Now, when you hear a local dance band, what have you witnessed?

Let me tell you what you have witnessed. You have watched and seen a group of individuals who have been at one point in their careers either judge individually or as a whole by others within the industry to not be good enough to either have their own recording deal or to tour with or be a headlining act. Or, you have just watched outstanding professionals who love being a local sensation and are considered the best at what they do by scores of local fans and professionals. You also may have just seen the worse excuse for covering one of your favorite songs by one of your favorite artists.

Nevertheless, what you have just witnessed are musicians as defined by Webster's Dictionary and by Society. Because of this, they demand, garner and get respect.

That is what this entire discussion is about. The Band Vs DJ is not about what is better for your event, or which one you should hire based on your likes and dislikes; it is simply about what do you as a consumer respect.

Bands and DJ's can do what you want for your event. ENTERTAIN! And talented professional's of both breed can have you saying, "see, we didn't need a DJ" or "see, we didn't need a band". With many events people have a vision due to past experience and the atmosphere they want to create. Keep this in mind, wether it is a Band or a DJ, you get what you pay for!

Recently I had the privilege of working with one of the baddest bands in Washington DC. Top notch musicians and just like myself, are listed as one of the best entertainment vendors for events in Washingtonian Magazine. The event that we did together was a Bar Mitzvah. This came about through one of my associates contacting me, after the band was hired, and asking me if I could be the DJ for the event. Since this is an associate and a respected acquaintance of mine, I was more than happy to do it as I always enjoy working with great professionals.

Everything flowed smoothly for the event as my associate, who was also the MC for the evening, had a great timeline in place. It outlined that the band and I would alternate thirty minute sets during the event. In my opinion this is a great idea. Bands do need breaks and DJ's are capable of masking their breaks with a proper music program in place. The client originally did not want a DJ. They just wanted the Band. In fact, my associate told me that he basically had to inform the client "that you have more than 100 kids coming and you expect them to listen to a cover band all night"?

Now unless the band is Usher, Hannah Montana, Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Taio Cruz, Jason Derulu, etc., my associate had a valid point.

Also, did he, the actual guest of honor, want a band for his Mitzvah? Probably not. However, with the crowd being a 50/50 ratio of adults to kids, and the clients being known for loving bands and feeling that DJ's are "not suitable" for a special event, we know why the band was hired. I was once told by a friend of mine, who is an event planner, that bands make a statement on behalf of the client's wallet and sense of style.

Once again, another insulting statement. This time, I asked them to elaborate because I wanted to make sure that I wasn't being too sensitive or over reacting. They said that when a client hires a band they are hiring musicians; people who are trained to perform live and to provide elegance to any event. I then asked, "is that it", they said, "well, yes, basically, DJ's are a guess because you need to know their style". You know what, I was still insulted.

As a professional DJ, I do what the client wants for my event and what is required of the event. I DO NOT JUST GO IN THERE AND PLAY RECORDS!

I AM NOT AN IPOD!

Now, I have digressed.

This Mitzvah was a huge celebration and the band and I were on the same level of performing. After the cocktail hour was over the doors opened up and the band began the evening based on the client's exact wishes. To be honest with you, if it wasn't for the dancers and our incredible MC, the kids would not have made their way to the dance floor during the first 10 minutes of the event. However, the timeline was well thought out and the dancers did their job well. After the band rocked a thirty minute set it was then my turn and I started them off with something popular, fast and upbeat. It was an instant hit and the dance floor was packed. This was the theme for the entire evening! With the band doing their thing and with me doing mine, they were getting the best of both world's.

Now, if my level of entertainment is on the same level of energy and excitement as the band's, and if we both are mentioned as top performers in a highly recognized publication, then why are we both not receiving the same in terms of respect, notoriety and compensation for our craft?

It has been several months since I posted on DJ Washington DC and believe it or not, it has been for a very good reason. Originally, as we began 2010, my objective for DJ Washington DC was to discuss what SEO websites and marketing gurus state as being the obvious for an entertainment blog. Such items would be how to pick your entertainment for your wedding along with do's and don'ts for a corporate function. As a consumer we discovered that this begins to translate into the following:

What I have discovered is that people want the actual feel and day to day process of an entertainer from the inside out. A blog should be a reality show on paper. They want to know what we do as we prepare for a wedding, as we put together a lounge mix or compilation, why would we choose to use vinyl over CD's or a Rane professional mixer over a Pioneer. Why would one MC and DJ a Mitzvah instead of doing one or the other and why would anyone be willing to perform at a concert by opening for an act in the freezing cold in the open air with no covering in case of rain.

Believe it or not, people actually want to know what makes a DJ unique. Choosing a DJ for any event can be a difficult task. I want to assist in making this process less time consuming by presenting a journal of information and procedures that allows visitors to review and understand the day to day perspective of the decision making process of an entertainment professional.

Music Profile - Part 2

As I pick up from last week, I was beginning to elaborate on the fact that professionals never wing it. We do improvise, as I previously stated, but winging it can be disastrous on many levels. Planning for an event, by anyone in the entertainment industry, is a must, especially when you have to perform and keep people happy throughout the evening. As a DJ for a wedding, or any private event, we are usually (on average) only 3% of the budget but we are 90% of the fun. Music will either make or break your event and there is no in between. Also, as a DJ, if I know not only my client, but also whom they have invited, then I am going to be able to please them with no problems.

Now, how do we begin this process? We begin by picking your brain. My initial thought is that I don’t care what you may wish to have played at your event (because I do) but I want to know each and every song that has made you either snap your finger, tap your feet or made you look like a Karaoke star while singing in your car at stop light. And what I mean by each and every song is anything that has made you happy, when hearing it, throughout your life. It comes down to one simple thing, “the more I know, the better the show”. Reason being is that if you like it, then nine out of ten times your family, friends and guests that you have invited, will also be pleased. As a professional, with this approach, it provides me with more leverage to insure music gratification.

My goal is to get to know the makeup of the crowd prior to the evening. By going down a list of music, likes and dislikes, and then formatting what you, the client, wants from the beginning of the event to the end, a formula is used to insure that your dance floor is packed the entire evening. Do all DJ’s use this approach? No and please do not be fooled. If a DJ is only asking for twenty songs and eras of music that you may or may not prefer, then you are probably not going to get exactly what you want. We are not iPods. We are professionals who must be able to put our finger on the pulse of the crowd and, based on what we obtain from you, manipulate them until they wear holes in the bottom of their shoes.

I have said this to numerous people in the past; the difference from a professional DJ and a hobbyist is that a professional plays for the crowd and hobbyists play for themselves.

This all boils down to a simple philosophy. Get to know your crowd. If we are incapable of doing that, then we, the DJ, will not be able to do our job and to do our job well. Talent is only one trait that a great DJ must have, however, the others, such as dedication to one’s craft, are not only needed but are required. We at DJOC insure success for your event by carrying these traits as well as our reputation on our sleeve. Music profiling is our approach and it has been proven effective each and every time.

Music Profile - Part 1

Today’s approach to music and music entertainment by any DJ has to be solid, concise and fundamentally sound. This is needed as preparing for any wedding; private or corporate event requires a process that must be personalized and unique. Restaurant, clubs, lounges and bars market their entertainment for a particular niche. A particular segment of society that they feel will benefit their establishment. That being said, people will now go to those venues to hear a music and entertainment format that they know will be featured. For all other types of events, research is needed to insure perfection.

Back in 2000 when I came to Washington DC and started Disc Jockeys On Call, I began working with several other DJ agencies as a subcontractor so that I could get a solid feel of the market. When contacted by an agency I would receive basic information on the event that would generalize the client’s need. Music surveys were completed by the client that would say that they wanted music from the 80’s, 90’s, Top 40, Big Band, Jazz, etc. Performing music for many years prior to this I knew that this approach was too presumptuous.

As a DJ, when you are doing an event, you need to know your crowd. You need to know all of their likes and dislikes so that you can get your finger on the pulse of the crowd to control the dancing. Performing at a club in which the patrons are aware of the marketing format, allows you flexibility by building on artists and music titles that have been proven effective time and time again. With your private event your intelligence comes from the client. You need to know all of their specific likes and dislikes so that you will have a true understanding of your soon to be audience. A music list does not accomplish this at all. Why? Because DJ’s are not iPods.

Let’s look at a particular scenario: when I meet with a client I am very specific when I set up an account for them on my website. As I begin my music consulting process, I ask them to tell me everything that they like. EVERYTHING. I advise them that a list of 20 specific songs is a “compilation CD” and that they are hiring me for my knowledge, professionalism and talent. I need to pick their brain and I request their help in doing this by asking them to trust my judgment. I must have a complete understanding of the crowd that will be attending. Now, the list of 20 songs is a great start, as I know the client wants to hear these specific songs listed. We now take this and begin to build a extensive music profile that may or may not be similar in style to the listed genres.

Why do we do this? Well, let’s look at the facts. Clients are not going to pay $1,000.00, $2,000.00 and $3,000.00 for any DJ or musician who just wings it. Like anything in life, if you want to succeed, you have to have a plan in place. And as a DJ we have to take into account that maybe the initial selection of songs may not set the mood that the client desires for their event. What if those songs are just a list of two or three artists? What do you, as a DJ, do as backup? Do you just wing it? No as professionals play for their audience and hobbyists play for themselves. In other words, Professionals never wing it, but we will improvise (smile).
